WHAT ARE HEAD LICE?

Head lice are tiny six-legged insects that are blood-sucking parasites. They live on the scalp of humans.

WHERE DO HEAD LICE COME FROM?

The evidence for head lice goes back many centuries. Lice was named as the third plague in the Old Testament of the Bible. The shell casings for lice have been found on Egyptian mummies.

HOW DO WE GET LICE?

In the majority of cases, head lice is passed with head to head contact. A smaller number of cases are passed through brushes and combs and sharing hats. Lice don’t like to leave their food supply unless a warm head is waiting for them.

DOES GETTING HEAD LICE MEAN I’M DIRTY?

Head lice actually prefer clean hair! It’s more difficult for them to lay eggs on greasy or dirty hair.

HOW DO HEAD LICE GET FROM ONE HEAD TO ANOTHER?

Head lice can only crawl. The cannot fly-no wings-or jump-no back legs.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE HEAD LICE?

Most obvious is an itchy scalp. But not all people with lice itch. Examine the person’s hair and look for nits or eggs a ¼ inch from the scalp glued at an angle. They are beige to brown in color.

WHO GETS HEAD LICE-CHILDREN?

Anyone can get head lice. They are equal opportunity bugs! Adult usually get them from their children-anyone is at risk!

WHY IS THERE SUCH A BIG HEAD LICE PROBLEM?

Lice have now become immune to OTC treatments. These treatments are no longer effective and cannot be relied on to kill head lice. We now have a “super lice” which is more difficult to deal with. My Hair helpers products are effective to remove head lice.

CAN HEAD LICE POSE ANY DANGER OR CARRY DISEASES?

No. They are more of a nuisance than anything! They pose no danger to anyone.

DOES OUR ENVIRONMENT PLAY ANY ROLE IN SPREADING LICE?

Our environment plays a very small part in the spread of lice. Lice only live 24-36 hours off the head. Nits or eggs won’t hatch off the head-they need the warmth of the scalp to hatch.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE CLEANED IF I HAVE HEAD LICE?

Common sense cleaning – a MEGA cleaning isn’t necessary! Think of your life as a 24-hour window-where did you sleep, wear, and sit? What clothing or brushes did you use? It’s not necessary to bag everything up. Take a lint roller over these areas and wash bedding-focus on combing the hair to remove ALL nits and lice. Lice do not live in your home!

WHEN HEAD LICE TRANSFERS FROM ONE HEAD TO ANOTHER HOW SOON CAN THEY START LAYING EGGS?

If the female head lice are fertilized they can start laying eggs right away. The female lice usually travel in harems with 7-8 females and one male. This is why head lice can escalate and multiply quickly with females laying eight to ten eggs daily.

HOW LONG CAN HEAD LICE LIVE ON THE HEAD?

One louse can live on the head 30 days.

IF MY CHILD HAS HEAD LICE WHO SHOULD I TELL?

Tell the school nurse so she can check your child’s classroom for others that may have lice. Also let friends , neighbors, and family members know so they can check their child’s hair.If you hide the fact you had lice nobody wins! You may get it right back! The range of time should be two weeks looking back to who your child was with.

IS ITCHING THE FIRST SIGN OF HEAD LICE?

Not always! The itching is caused by an allergic reaction caused by the saliva that the louse injects upon feeding to clot the blood. Not everyone is allergic and may not itch for 2 weeks. Half the population doesn’t itch at all!

IS THERE A HEAD LICE SEASON?

More head lice is reported during school year. Head lice happens all the time but is more evident during school when others are checking.

IF MY CHILD HAS HEAD LICE SHOULD I TREAT EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY?

Everyone in the family should be checked with a spiral toothed lice comb on wet detangled hair. If you do a dry check it’s easier to miss a bug hiding in the hair. Treat those family members that you have found nits and lice.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS DOES MY CHILD NEED IF THEY HAVE LICE?

I suggest two treatments within 4-5 days apart. I also suggest combing with the lice comb from MHH twice a week for two weeks while lice is being treated

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT HEAD LICE?

Head lice leave a scent behind on the hair that attracts other lice. I liken it to a dog doing his business on the same spot that is familiar to them. Head lice know where they have been and like to return! Keep repellant on to deter lice from your hair.

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE GET HEAD LICE OVER AND OVER?

Head lice leave a scent behind on the hair that attracts other lice. I liken it to a dog doing his business on the same spot that is familiar to them. Head lice know where they have been and like to return! Keep repellant on to deter lice from your hair.
