During pregnancy, it’s important to take as many precautions as you can to keep you and baby safe. But what happens when you discover that you have head lice while pregnant? Store-bought head lice removal products contain pesticides that may pose a risk to your unborn baby. They can also cause undesirable side effects such as excessive itching and allergic reactions.

Fortunately, there are ways to treat lice in a proper and safe manner while pregnant. You can also use the same treatments on anyone else in the household. Chances are, someone in the home brought the lice to YOU!

Best Lice Treatments During Pregnancy

Getting rid of head lice quickly and efficiently is a top priority when you’re pregnant. You’re already uncomfortable enough – you certainly don’t need to be up during the night with an itchy head!

Here are some of the best ways to treat lice when you’re pregnant.

Wet combing

Head lice in pregnancy are best treated with wet combing since it’s free of all risks. It’s also very effective!

To begin, wet your hair and lubricate it with a conditioner. Taking a fine-toothed lice comb, comb through your hair. Upon each stroke, examine the comb for any lice and wipe them onto a paper towel. Repeat this method every day until you see no more live lice or nits. You can then scale back to every few days for a couple of weeks.

Natural treatments

Natural treatments are typically not our first choice because they’re often messy and ineffective. However, because your options are more limited when you’re pregnant, you may want to try one of them.

Be sure to ask your doctor before using essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree or cloves. It’s common to have sensitive skin during pregnancy, so these oils can cause irritation when they normally wouldn’t.

Aside from essential oils, you can also try olive oil, butter or mayonnaise. These ingredients work by suffocating lice. While these natural treatments may be “safe,” they’re often messy and tedious, and they may cause adverse reactions. There are better options available!

All-natural lice removal products

We do not recommend using over-the-counter head lice removal products because they contain pesticides. In fact, we don’t recommend them for anyone – pregnant or not. We also advise not using prescription medications because there is not enough data on how they may affect unborn babies.

However, if you don’t want to mess around with natural remedies or nightly wet combing, you do have a safe option: dimethicone lice oil from My Hair Helpers. Our line of all-natural, non-toxic head lice removal products are safe for children and adults of all ages. They can even be used on pregnant women and newborns.
