Have you noticed your child scratching their head lately? Are they complaining of an itchy, irritated scalp? It’s possible that head lice are to blame.

If this is your first time with head lice, you’re probably unsure of what steps to take next. Do you call your pediatrician? Notify the school or daycare? Or should you just wait until the head lice die off?

Head lice need to be treated effectively to take care of the problem. While individual head lice will die off, the infestation will not. In fact, it will continue to get worse and spread to more people, including those in your household!

Let’s learn more about the head lice lifespan and the importance of quick, effective treatment.

Understanding the Life Cycle of Head Lice

The average life cycle of a louse is 30 days. Once they find their way onto a human host, the females begin to lay eggs. Females become fully mature in two weeks, and they’ll start laying around ten eggs a day. The eggs take 7-9 days to hatch and develop into adults, continuing the life cycle.

Without treatment, the lice infestation will continue to grow. It will NOT stop on its own. While lice do not transmit disease, they can be difficult to get rid of. They have the unique ability to hold their breath for eight hours, which is why you can’t eliminate them with shampoo and water.

Getting Rid of a Head Lice Infestation

Combing out lice and nits is a great way to help the problem, especially if it’s mild. But for full-blown infestations, you’ll need some type of head lice removal product. You can then use wet combing to remove any remaining lice or nits.

While pharmacies do carry head lice treatment products, we generally do not recommend them. This is because these products tend to be made from insecticides, which can cause adverse reactions, especially in young children or those with sensitive skin.

Another option you may have heard about is a home remedy, such as smothering the lice in mayonnaise or olive oil. You can read more about home remedies here. Some of these methods work better than others, but overall, they are messy and ineffective.
